Eyetracker cameras in development are tied to biometric software to
tell the car if the driver is nodding off, distracted etc. A variation on that software can recognize the driver's face. If the face is not on a list of "approved" drivers the car won't start.
The trick there would be getting it done legally without people opposing it as an invasion of privacy.

I agree with some of you though. This is daft that this guy isn't being charged with attempted murder or similar. Vehicular manslaughter will probably turn into something even less with a plea bargain. The sad fact is that with our current system, if the (formerly a Dr.) Thompson was lower middle class with a public defender he'd have been put away for good within a few months of the incident.
Oh, you mean like Mel Gibson and his early probation termination and his record being expunged?

Yet you do 10 years for possession of a couple joints. It boggles the mind.

Where did you hear that? I know someone who got caught for possession twice... once with intent to sell. He didn't spend a day in prison.

Guess it depends on who you are. Often times a DA can prosecute someone based on the amount. Over a certain weight it becomes "intent to sell" whether or not there is any actual intent. But then again, I believe that is the maximum one could receive, so compared to maybe 5 years for attempted murder vs. 10 for a victimless crime, ya...

I see your point.

fwiw rape carries a 3 year sentence apparently.

I think being an ass is part of the job description for any defense attorney.
